If Bulgaria and Romania are in the Schengen area, they will support the processes of controlling the migrant pressure in Europe much more effectively.
This main thesis was defended today in Vienna by the Prime Minister Academician Nikolay Denkov. In the Austrian capital, he spoke with Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer, with parliamentarians, as well as with the Association of Austrian Industrialists.
We will be more useful to the European Union (EU) inside than outside Schengen, Academician Denkov stated at all his meetings. If the borders between Bulgaria and Greece and Bulgaria and Romania disappear, our country will be able to free up human and material resources to better guard the external borders of the EU - especially between Bulgaria and Turkey and between Bulgaria and Serbia. In addition, cargo will not have to wait for days at the internal borders of the EU, which will reduce the cost of transporting goods from Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania to Central and Eastern Europe, and also to Western Europe. “This means lower food prices and lower inflation. This means better political stability in all countries in Eastern and Central Europe. We will only win from this. Whereas, if we stay outside Schengen, we all lose," the prime minister was categorical.
According to him, it takes time for these arguments to be heard and understood, so that they also reach the Austrian society. Academician Denkov believes that in December of this year at the regular meeting of the European Council, everyone will be prepared "to take the decisions that are most useful for the people of Austria, for the people of Bulgaria and for the European Union as a whole, because this is our common goal".
Bulgaria and Austria do not differ on the main actions that the EU should take to control migration pressure. External borders must be strengthened, treaties with the third countries from which migrants come to be supported so that people without the right to stay in Europe can be returned, and the system of legal migration must be improved. These topics are already among the priorities of the EU.
Chancellor Nehamer recognized the contribution of Bulgaria and Romania in protecting the external borders of the EU: "The European Union knows very well that Bulgaria and Romania contribute a lot to the security of Schengen." He confirmed Austria's position against Schengen expansion at the moment, stating categorically that it has nothing to do with Bulgaria and Romania. "This is a matter of security, because we have very big challenges in the Schengen area. Interior ministers say that the Schengen system does not actually work. 11 EU member states exercise internal border control," said Carl Nehammer. /BGNES
