FBI Director Christopher A. Wray said he intends to resign before President-elect Donald Trump's term begins.
"I've decided that the right thing for the bureau is to serve out the remainder of this administration's term in January and then step down. That's the best way to avoid getting the Bureau deeper into controversy while strengthening the values and principles that are so important to the way we do our work," Wray said.
The chief said he loved his job at the FBI, the mission of the bureau and the people he worked with.
The announcement comes after Trump said in late November that he intended to nominate Kash Patel, a longtime loyalist, to lead the FBI, and more than two years before Wray's 10-year term expires.
FBI Deputy Director Paul Abate will retire in April but will serve as acting director until Patel is confirmed. It is unclear who will replace Abate. | BGNES
