Actor Jim Carrey admitted he came out of retirement for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 because he needed the money.
The comedian was speaking on the red carpet ahead of the premiere of the third Sonic movie in London on December 10. He was asked why he returned to the franchise, based on the video game series of the same name, after quitting acting two years ago. He replied, "I came back to this galaxy because, first of all, I got the chance to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch. And, you know, I just... I bought a lot of stuff and, frankly, I need the money."
Carey stars as the villainous Dr. Robotnik in all three films. The previous installments were released in 2020 and 2022. However, in an interview with Access Hollywood in 2022, Carey said he had "done enough" acting work and was "quite seriously" considering retirement.
"I really like my quiet life and I really like putting paint to canvas, I really like my spiritual life and I feel like... I've had enough," he explained.
Carey explored his love of painting and sculpture in the 2017 documentary "I Needed Color," but his efforts aren't always fully appreciated. Jonathan Jones of the the Guardian described his work as "astonishingly bad" and "a joke".
The actor suggested he might reconsider his decision "if the angels bring some script written in gold ink that tells me it's going to be really important for people to see." Asked if Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was such a script, Carey jokingly replied, "That was probably hyperbole." | BGNES
