Macron promised to appoint a new prime minister in the coming days

French President Emmanuel Macron promised to appoint a new prime minister "in the coming days". Macron's words come after the resignation of Prime Minister Michel Barnier, whose government was ousted in a no-confidence vote in parliament, AFP reports.

In an address to the nation, the president rejected calls from his opponents to resign, saying he would remain president "until the end of his mandate" in 2027. He criticised the far right and the left, which have joined forces to topple the government.

Macron stated that the person who would be appointed prime minister would be tasked with forming a "government of common interest" with the priority of passing the budget.

He claimed MPs had "deliberately" chosen "to bring down the budget and the government just a few days before the Christmas holidays".

The French presidency said earlier that Barnier and his ministers would remain "in charge of the day-to-day work until a new government is appointed". | BGNES
