Keeping clothing out of the trash

By giving local women the opportunity to purchase and sell high-end designer apparel while preventing it from ending up in a landfill, a group of Southland women are doing their part to protect the environment.
The goal of the sale, according to coordinator and fashion stylist Mary Witsey, was to give Southland women access to affordable, high-end designer clothing. However, it also has to do with recycling and being environmentally conscious.

An estimated 180,000 tonnes of textile and apparel waste are disposed of in New Zealand landfills annually, reported Otago Daily Times.

"I'd love to see more people purchasing and're-loving' high-quality designer clothes manufactured in New Zealand; that way, those items would be taken out of the closet, given to other ladies, and they would be able to enjoy their style and quality for years to come.

"Several New Zealand fashion designers, such as Maaike, Mild Red, and Kate Sylvester, have announced that they will be closing their doors this year.

You never know what you have until it's gone, which is why I firmly believe in supporting New Zealand's fashion sector and our fantastic local fashion merchants."The purpose of our offer is to honor designer apparel. Offering affordable, stylish apparel to women in the South, promoting New Zealand fashion, and contributing to environmental causes."

The reason it's called the "Duck Shooter’s Widows’ Designer Clothing Sale" is that many Southland men spend the day at the mai mai on May 4, the first Saturday of the duck-shooting season.

If you want to beat the masses, there will be special VIP entry available from 9 to 10 am for $10 per person. The event will take place in Winton at the Mrs. Tradie premises on Great North Road. Hours of operation are 9 am to 5 pm. Free admission begins at 10 a.m.

"Winton will be celebrating a fantastic day of cuisine and fashion, which is extremely exciting."Not only are we holding our designer sale, but Winton’s newest cafe, Blatch Brothers Eatery Store, which is opposite our designer sale, will also be open and Winton’s Middle Pub is holding a food market"./BGNES
