The head of the 32nd Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition Prof. Hristo Pimpirev: We leave with our ship, which is a big plus

"The first group is leaving too late this year, but with our ship - it's a big extra that we can't even dream of." This was stated for BGNES by the head of the first group of the 32nd Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition, Prof. Dr. Hristo Pimpirev, right before the group took off for Ushuaia, Argentina, a BGNES reporter reported.

Prof. Pimpirev pointed out that the group is very large, of 15 people. "From here the plane lands in Rome, immediately to Buenos Aires and then immediately to Ushuaia, where they board the Bulgarian polar ship St. Cyril and Methodius. This ship will launch boats with which it will take our polar explorers directly on board and from there they will head to the Bulgarian base," explained the head of the expedition, after which he specified that there are very important tasks before our envoys in Antarctica.

"First, 70 tons of materials have to be removed for the construction of the new research laboratory, which is due to be completed entirely externally this year. In fact, this laboratory will house Bulgarian and foreign scientists well into the 22nd century. We are building it for the future, but we hope that from next year the scientists will do their scientific research", noted Prof. Pimpirev.

He emphasized that there are more than 10 scientific projects that will deal with global climate changes. "Our scientists are studying the movement of the glaciers, what minerals are there in the base, as it turned out there is a lot of gold and precious metals, so there is a lot of work. An almost unexplored island will be explored - Smith Island, which so far several expeditions have not even been able to land on its shores," explained the head of the 32nd Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition. He added that more people will join the expedition later, including those who have conquered Everest.

The commander of the Bulgarian Antarctic Station "St. Kl. Ohridski" Kamen Nedkov, the doctor Dr. Atanas Peltekov, the electrical engineer Rosen Stefanov, the mechanics Konstantin Nedev and Vladimir Gigov, the logisticians Damyan Paunov and Alexander Naydenov, the boatman Elka Vasileva, the builder Marcho Paunov and the cook Stanko Georgiev departed from Sofia Airport on the route Sofia - Rome - Buenos Aires - Ushuaia. The executors of scientific projects are also traveling with them - the ichthyologist and hydrobiologist Prof. Dr. Eliza Uzunova, the biologist Assoc. Dr. Lyubomir Kenderov, the marine geologist Assoc. Dr. Raina Hristova and the engineers Dr. Petar Sapundjiev and Vahan Petev. /BGNES
