Danish chef launches gourmet cuisine into the stratosphere

Danish chef Rasmus Munk wants to take high-end cuisine to the edge of space, with plans to serve stratospheric cuisine in 2025, his restaurant has announced.

"The expedition will take place aboard the Space Perspective Spaceship Neptune, the world's first carbon-neutral spacecraft," said a statement from Copenhagen's Alchemist restaurant, which earned Munk two Michelin stars.

"They will dine while watching the sunrise over the curvature of the Earth" at an altitude of 30,000 feet above sea level, the announcement said.

For $495,000 per ticket, six tourists will take a six-hour trip in a pressurized space capsule that will ascend into the stratosphere in a hydrogen-filled "Space Balloon."

Joining the journey will be a 32-year-old chef and self-confessed space enthusiast.

Munk promises "dishes inspired by the role of space exploration over the past 60 years of human history and the impact it has had on our society - both scientifically and philosophically."

His menu will be limited only by his inability to cook food over an open fire.

Many of the ingredients will be cooked on the ship from which the capsule was lowered, according to Alchemist, which is ranked fifth among the world's restaurants in 2023 by the guide The 50 Best Restaurants in the World.

In recent decades, Denmark has become a gastronomic power on earth, with Copenhagen restaurants Noma and Geranium holding the title of best restaurant in the world. / BGNES
