Czech Republic tightens gun laws after Prague shooting

A month after the deadliest shooting in the country's modern history, the Czech parliament has passed a bill to tighten gun control measures, the first step towards passing a new law, AFP reports.

In December, a student killed 14 people and wounded 25 before shooting himself at Charles University in Prague's historic centre.

The bill was introduced by the government last June, months before the shooting, and orders gun sellers to report suspicious purchases.

The measures, which have not yet been passed by the Senate and signed by the president, still allow Czechs to buy, own and carry guns.

They also allow police to confiscate weapons because of security risks and introduce stricter medical checks for gun owners.

The Home Office is now planning an amendment that will further tighten the rules on gun ownership, which is due to be tabled in Parliament this year. / BGNES
